The Chess Olympiad: Team Chess at Its Finest

Pawn Storm Staff May 28, 2026 at 11:51 AM 1 min read

The Chess Olympiad is the World Cup of chess — more than 180 nations, hundreds of boards, weeks of competition. Here's everything you need to know.

The Chess Olympiad, held every two years, is the largest chess event in the world. Over 180 nations compete across Open and Women's sections in a format where national teams of four players plus one reserve compete in daily rounds of team matches.

The Team Dynamic

The Olympiad creates a unique dynamic not found in individual chess: the psychological factor of playing for your country, the strategy of board order selection, and the team atmosphere that can lift or sink individual performance. Some players who perform moderately in individual events become giants at the Olympiad; others crack under the collective pressure.

The Historic Powerhouses

The Soviet Union and its successor states dominated the Olympiad for decades. Russia, Armenia, China, and the United States have been the consistent powers in the modern era. The Women's section has been dominated by China, with Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia as persistent challengers.
